Patrick
Garcia, HUAWA treasurer and membership director, and coach
at Waianae High School, was also over in early August. Patrick
has been our main contact with USAW as we became a charter
club. Patrick demonstrated several attacks from the "Russian
arm bar", and also demonstrated counters. Ever since
Patrick visited several of the wrestlers have been using
the "Russian" in scrimmage matches.
Sam Silva, assistant coach at Farrington High School, visited
us the weekend of August 13. Sam conducted an all day clinic
on Saturday, we were all worn out! Sam is an excellent hands
on teacher. It was amazing to see him throw coach Mac and
team captain Jojo with such ease, even though he is much
smaller. Be sure to view the video clips of Sam demonstrating
the the front head lock and alligator roll.
On Thursday August 18 we moved both mats, 6 sections, to
the Waimea High School Gym. We will practice there every
night until the tournament on Saturday August 27. It was
a long hard day for the club members, coaches, parents and
friends. Special mahalo to Kauai Commercial for the hauling,
and of course Pastor James Merritt at our club home, Waimea
Baptist Church. Pastor James helped lift and carry, and
drove the church van to PMRF and back to help shuttle the
mat movers.
Coach Mac's sister Sandy, her husband Mike and children,
Hunter and Savanna were visiting Kauai from Texas and came
to a few practices. Both Hunter and Savanna went full speed
on the mat, and had a lot of fun with the Westside Wrestlers.
Mike is a former high school wrestler and martial arts practitioner,
he helped with the practices while visiting. Coach Mac and
his brother in law Mike kept up the family rivalry, going
at it full speed on that mat. The takedown competiition
was about a tie after 3 practices, with a lot of full speed
action, it was fun to watch!
