OIA High school tournament

March 28, 2006

We had a busy winter season!
Club members and Waimea High Freshman Daniel Quinlan, Chris Kaiakapu, Evan Hurd and Cole Burton made history competing in 3 Oahu Interscholastic Association wrestling tournaments. Club members Latisha Alo, 10 years old, and her brother Bulla, 7 years old, competed in 3 Oahu Police Athletic League youth tournaments.

As far as we know, the Waimea High Freshman were the first ever wrestlers from Kauai to compete in OIA tournaments. Check out the articles in the Garden Island Newspaper:

The OIA High School tournaments were great experiences for the boys. The tournaments had from 15 to 20 high schools. The Aloha we received from the other wrestlers, coaches, referees and families was overwhelming! Everyone was so glad to finally see a team from Kauai. You can imagine how the boys felt surrounded by big teams in matching uniforms, many of the Oahu schools have wrestling programs well over 20 years, some probably 50 year wrestling programs. The Oahu schools have huge populations to put their teams together, the 4 Waimea boys and 2 Westside Wrestling coaches were definitely the "little giants". I say "little giants" because they really did well! Although Cole and Evan did not win a match, they both improved and had great moments. Chris Kaiakapu had some victories and kept getting better. Daniel Quinlan put his name on the wrestling map, by losing only 2 matches in 3 tournaments. Check the "Tournament Results" section for more information. By the end of the third tournament it was clear that Daniel was a contender for a Junior Varsity Championship in the 140 lb weight class. Unfortunately the boys were not allowed to compete in the JV Championship tournament because they had not fulfilled the certification requirements usually accomplished through their school. Westside Wrestling continues to encourage Waimea High School and the Kauai Interscholastic Federation to sanction the sport of wrestling! Coach Mac does have a plan to get the boys certified next school year, in the event the KIF does not sanction the sport.

Latisha and Bulla Alo did well in the Oahu PAL tournaments. Tisha lost only one match in three tournaments. Bulla had some wins and some losses, and showed continued improvement. Coach Mac is taking Tisha to the US Girls Wrestling Association Nationals in Detroit Michigan April 1&2. The best girls in the Nation compete in this event for National titles. Westside Wrestling will also sponsor Tisha's nieces Teniya and Teshya, so we will have a three girl team at the Nationals.

On Saturday January 21 we had another car wash and yard sale to raise money. It went well and everybody had a lot of fun as you will see from the pictures.

On February 10 we did a demonstration at Waimea Canyon School. Wrestlers Teniya, Teshya and Latisha Alo, as well as Daniel Quinlan, Chris Kaiakapu, and Evan Hurd helped Coach Jojo and Coach Mac put on a live demonstration for the kids at Waimea Canyon School. It was a lot of fun and the kids seemed to enjoy the show. The Waimea High Principal gave the boys an excused absence for the day to do the demonstration, it lasted most of the school day. The Waimea Canyon kids attended in groups throughout the day as part of their health and PE classes.

The Spring/Summer Hawaii USAW wrestling tournament season starts Saturday 3/25 at Mililani High School on Oahu. Coach Mac, Daniel Quinlan, Cory Howatt, Latisha and Bulla Alo are flying over to compete at Mililani.

Westside Wrestling will host our second annual USAW Sanctioned tournament on June 10 at Waimea High School Gym. On June 9, the day before the tournament, we have Brandon Slay scheduled to teach a clinic. Brandon was a 2000 US Olympic Gold Medalist. So we will have a 2 day event at the Waimea Gym! More specific information is posted in the "Tournament/Clinic Information" section.

So, the winter season was busy and the spring/summer season is even more busy!
